NJ Drug Bust Yields 17,000 Doses of Heroin

huge new jersey drug bust yields 17,000 doses of heroin

Weekly news of epic drug busts seems to have become part of the norm in our society. If we’re not focused on politics and everything going on in that arena, our focus shifts directly onto the drug crisis and the worsening state of affairs. Epic drug busts almost happen one after another, each one becoming more alarming than the next. While the opioid crisis was once focused in one area of the country, the Northeast, it’s since spread everywhere, leaving no community unaffected. New Jersey found itself in the epicenter of the heroin problem years ago with more and more residents getting strung out on OxyContin and heroin and finding themselves hopelessly addicted, only using to make the sickness go away. Since the then, the problem hasn’t gone away. It just seems that it integrated itself in with the rest of the “normal” societal issues the U.S. faces. Recently, a huge bust made headlines when an enormous amount of heroin was found that luckily never made it onto city streets because, if it had, the results could have been catastrophic.

In Fair Lawn, New Jersey, a recent State Police bust found 17,000 doses of heroin and a kilo of cocaine getting ready to hit the community for sale. The bust occurred last Thursday at a local storage facility where 337 bricks of heroin, firearms, and other drug paraphernalia were found, resulting in two arrests. That amount of heroin could have been broken down in thousands upon thousands of individual doses that could have potentially killed a lot of people. State Police commanding officer Col. Patrick Callahan said,

“The amount of heroin seized in the storage facility alone amounts to nearly 17,000 individual doses.”

Fortunately, these doses will never make it into the hands of the public thanks to the diligent work of the State Police Trafficking Central and North units, who work tirelessly to stop the flow of drugs into our communities.” The case is going to continue to be prosecuted and hopefully these big-time dealers will spend big-time in prison.

The infuriating part of the whole thing is the fact that the sheer amount of drugs found in this investigation could have robbed children from their parents, parents from their children, and everything else in between. Drugs are going to wind up being the cause of the downfall of our society. When are we going to come to our senses and wake up? Whatever we’ve been doing so far to handle this problem obviously isn’t working. When drug busts take huge amounts of narcotics off the street, it’s bittersweet. It’s a great thing that law enforcement stepped in and stopped the whole thing but it’s extremely disturbing that had they not, it’s unthinkable what might have happened. As I commonly say, anyone who dies from their addiction is an unnecessary loss of life because addiction is completely treatable and most importantly, preventable. Something needs to change, something needs to give. We need to try something else.
