“I’m Going to Be the One”: A Champion for the Next Generation

For one Narconon Suncoast graduate, recovery from drug abuse means more than changing his own life. His family says he is breaking a generational cycle.

We are social beings. When one person struggles with addiction, the effects rarely stop with that person. It has a way of reaching into the lives of everyone connected to the one suffering. Conversely, rehabilitation can be a drop in the pond that expands to reach the farthest shore.

For Tyrece’s family, completing the Narconon Suncoast program represented that first drop with the power to create a ripple effect across generations.

What Is Narconon Suncoast?

Narconon Suncoast is a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation center located in Clearwater, Florida. The facility sits on seven acres of landscaped grounds and provides a structured environment where students can focus on recovery.

What makes the Narconon approach different is its emphasis on a drug-free rehabilitation program. It is not a traditional 12-step program, nor does it use substitute medications. It is designed to help individuals escape the rehab trap by addressing cravings, flushing out residual toxins, and developing practical skills for remaining drug-free once they return to their lives and society.

A Long Family Struggle

Tyrece’s aunt, Nayyirah Muhammad, who spoke at his graduation, touched on the many times she had tried to help other relatives with addiction.

“My father passed away in 2001, and he was in prison. On his passing bed, he said that he wanted the drugs to stop with him.”

She has watched family members grapple with drugs for years. Following her father’s wishes, she worked hard to seek help for them, to find someone brave enough and strong enough to face their demons and come out clean. “I was honestly giving up hope,” she said.

Then Tyrece called. “Auntie, can you help me?” he asked.

A Champion for the Next Generation

“I was blown away,” she said. Nayyirah immediately made arrangements to ensure he could receive the best care at Narconon Suncoast. Her perseverance and willingness to help were matched by Tyrece’s desire to change.

“For him to stick through this program, 90 days strong, being isolated from his family, away from everything that he loved and give it up, everything. This is not only for himself.”

“We have a bunch of young men in our family," and he said, ‘I'm going to be the one.’”

Moved with emotion, she went on: “Tyrese, you are the champion for the next generation. You keep fighting the good fight.”

Breaking the Cycle in Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay region knows how devastating substance abuse can be. According to Florida Department of Health charts, the area saw 967 deaths from drug poisoning (Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and Hernando counties combined) in the most recent year on record.

Behind every number is a person. And behind every person are families and countless others affected. That is what makes Tyrece’s story so significant to the people who love him. His recovery is an opportunity to interrupt a pattern.

“Tyrese broke a generational cycle with this program.”

One of Tyrece’s cousins who also attended his graduation described the moment plainly. “Tyrese broke a generational cycle with this program.” To Tyrese, he says, “I’m genuinely, genuinely proud of you, bro.”
