Here at Suncoast Rehab we are concerned that many people may not understand the risks involved in combining drugs or drugs and alcohol. Ignorance of the impact of such combinations opens the door to people being persuaded to try “special” combinations in their search for greater impact and greatly increases the risk of serious medical problems up to and including death.

Therefore we want to discuss this problem, often called “mixed drug toxicity.”

Why is it so dangerous?  Why does this activity kill so many?  Here are the three main reasons:

  1. Mixing an upper like cocaine with other uppers like Ritalin or downers like heroin with other downers like alcohol can speed up or slow down the body’s central nervous system to a point where the heart fails.  This is among the most common reasons for drug deaths.  One drug enhances the effects of another.
  2. Mixing and matching drugs that do different things, like a downer with an upper can cause the heart to function erratically and can cause seizures or heart failure.  The reason for this is, depending upon when the drug hits the system, the heart is getting two completely different messages simultaneously, or one after the other.  If you try to run and lay down at the same time, or you have to bolt into a run from a prone position, you’d likely fall on your face.  The heart is having the same reaction.
  3.  The users do not know the dosage of each drug they are taking, nor do they know which drugs do and do not work well together.  Additionally, some drug dealers sell one drug and label it as another.  So, when using recreationally, the user never knows what they are really taking and this can negatively affect person.

There are many, many popular drug mixes found on the street.  Below are just a few, along with their street names:

Cocaine and Morphine – known as C&M

Cocaine and Heroin – known as Batman, Belushi, Boy-girl, Dynamite, H&C, Murder one, Sandwich, Smoking gun, Snowball, and Speedball

This is the mixture that killed River Pheonix, John Belushi, Chris Farly, and Mitch Hedburg.

Cocaine and PCP – known as Beam me up Scottie

Codeine, Alcohol, and Antihistaminesknown as Drank, Mud, Oil, Sizzurp, Purple drank, Purple stuff, and Lean

This mix has killed several Southern rappers, including the one who popularized it – DJ Screw.

Crack cocaine and Heroin – known as Back to back, Chocolate rock, Dragon rock, Eightball, Moonrock, Parachute, Primo, Scramble, and Smoke

These are just a few of the many popular drug mixes.  This doesn’t include the many, many prescription drug mixes that kill or the “pharm parties” teens become involved in.
