We at Suncoast Rehabilitation Center have more myths to shatter with truth today:

MYTH #9:

Driving is not affected by the influence of drugs.

Driving Under the Influence

TRUTH:

Drugs negatively affect driving ability. Many drugs impair coordination, weaken muscles, affect attention span and judgment, as well as blur your vision. Distortion of the area around you is also another side effect, one that is especially dangerous for drivers. Statistics state that a driver with an alcohol concentration above 0.05 faces the same risks as someone under the influence of cannabis or an amphetamine based substance.  Additionally, there are some prescription and over-the-counter medications which explicitly state they are not to be used when one plans to drive within a certain period of time.

MYTH #10:

It takes years for someone to become dependent on a drug.

TRUTH:

Heroin addiction

There are research studies showing that most people who become dependent on cocaine do so within three years of starting cocaine use.  However, other drugs like heroin – as well as other opiates like Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Vicodin, Percocet, Morphine – can become addictive within three consecutive uses of the drug.  Additionally, highly addictive drugs like methamphetamine have been reported only need one or two uses to get a user hooked.  It’s easier to become addicted to meth than it is to become addicted to heroin or PCP.
